Modern Sukiya Style for  Western Homes

Discussion led by: Craig Klucina, carpenter and furniture maker of Chicago's Plane-Spoken

Description: Klucina will discuss how Western spaces can be transformed with the introduction of shoji, ranma, fusuma and tansu.  Further, he will explain how a craftsman can alter the proportions of architectural elements, such as windows, walls and ceilings—always remaining mindful of the relationship between interior and exterior spaces—in order to create truly modern sukiya spaces.  He will discuss Plane-Spoken's current project, which involves these elements and concerns.

For those who appreciate the special quality of time spent in a well-executed sukiya room or who are thinking of transforming their own homes, this is an opportunity to learn more.

About the Presenter: Klucina has been making shoji and tansu for over a decade.  As his interest and expertise in the architectural style known as modern sukiya grew, Plane-Spoken expanded to offer design, consultation and construction services for the integration of sukiya elements into Western homes.  To remain relevant, the modern sukiya style has necessarily evolved from its inception with the tea ceremony.  It now includes modern conveniences while retaining essential defining characteristics.  It employs materials and workmanship of the highest quality, resulting in spaces of refined simplicity and beauty.  Klucina believes that the skilled craftsman is uniquely qualified to synthesize tradition and precedent with contemporary demands and applications in order to achieve modern sukiya spaces.
