train trip in October
« on: September 11, 2012, 01:35:01 AM »
My husband Bill and I are traveling from Hawaii to Denver in October. In order to make the most of our mainland travel, we are planning a few side trips to Japanese gardens. Bearing in mind where we are going along the following route, are there any suggestions Forum members would like to make?
Many thanks,
KT

We fly to San Diego Thursday, October 4, and arrive very late in the evening. Friday and Saturday will be in the San Diego area. We have made arrangements to attend "Allegiance" in the Old Globe Theatre at Balboa Park on Saturday.
Sunday, we board the Pacific Surfliner to travel to Los Angeles where we catch the Southwest Chief and head to Albuquerque. We will be in Albuquerque Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8 and 9, then fly to Denver Wednesday, Oct. 10.
After attending the NAJGA conference in Denver, we depart Sunday evening for Phoenix. We are in Phoenix through Thursday, October 18 when we board the Sunset Limited and head to Los Angeles.
We will be staying in the Hilton Doubletree in Little Tokyo (the former Kyoto Gardens Hotel) Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Monday afternoon we get back on the Pacific Surfliner and head back to San Diego for a few more days before heading home.
On the list so far are
San Diego: The Japanese Friendship Garden at Balboa Park, Marston House and the San Diego Tech Center
Albuquerque: Sasebo Japanese Garden
Denver: Shofuen
Phoenix: Ro Ho En and
Avondale: Kaizu Japanese garden at Friendship Park and
Tuscon: Yume
plus a tour of Taliesin West
Los Angeles: hotel garden, James Irvine Japanese Garden at JACCC, Nishi Hongwanji and a visit to the Getty
San Diego: return to Balboa Park
