Japanese Flower Viewing (Hanami Chakai) Tea Ceremony & Sweet Making (Wagashi) Workshop

Anderson Japanese Gardens will host tea gatherings on Saturday, April 23 & Sunday, April 24.  Both dates will feature a hanami chakai, or traditional Japanese Flower Viewing Tea Ceremony and provide a hands-on lesson focused on proper tea serving procedures and guest etiquette.   Sunday’s gathering will also feature a lesson on making Japanese sweets (wagashi).  Tea Ceremonies will be held in Anderson Japanese Gardens’ Tea House, and the wagashi workshop will take place in the Guest House.   To follow proper Tea Ceremony etiquette, participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the ceremony and wear white socks.  Shoes are not allowed to be worn in the Tea or Guest House.  Space is limited for all tea gatherings and reservations are required.

The tea ceremonies & workshop will be led by Kimiko Gunji, Professor Emeritus of Japanese Traditional Art and Culture and former Director of Japan House at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
