June 13 and 14, 9:00am-3:00pm

Discover the nobedan walk, a style of stone pathway traditionally used in Japanese tea gardens and in the entries to nobleman’s homes. These unique walks are created using distinctive design principles, and result in stones of various shapes and sizes arranged in a pattern that is simultaneously artistic and functional. Nobedan paths add a serenity to any garden and can be seen widely, both in gardens throughout Japan and in our own Portland Japanese Garden. This two-day program begins with a lecture and presentation by Garden Curator, Sadafumi Uchiyama. Later participants will work side by side with Head Gardener, Michael Kondo, to construct a nobedan path of their own.

Please note: workshops will proceed as scheduled rain or shine, and participants will need to provide their own lunches.
