May 2 and 3, 9:00am-3:00pm

The durability and flexibility of Bamboo fences have made them increasingly popular with gardeners and homeowners alike. This two-day, hands-on workshop at the Portland Japanese Garden takes an immersive approach to Bamboo fences that addresses both the theory and the skills needed for Bamboo fence building.  Workshop participants will learn about the history and evolution of Japanese style bamboo fences with Garden Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama who will first walk them through the Garden reviewing the use and placement of bamboo fences.  Hands-on practice in knot-tying, building, repairing, and refurbishing will be guided by staff gardeners and will culminate with participants designing and building a fence panel using traditional Japanese materials and techniques.

Please note: workshops will proceed as scheduled rain or shine, and participants will need to provide their own lunches.
